Bar Beach Concrete Driveways

Bar Beach is defined by two things: the slope and the salt. Blocks step steeply down toward the beach or climb up toward The Hill, so a driveway here is frequently closer to an engineering question than a paving one, with gradient, the transition at the garage, step arrangements and the load on retaining structures all needing to be resolved together rather than one at a time. Retaining commonly forms part of the same project, holding a cut beside a driveway or terracing a garden down toward a view, and the drainage behind those structures matters as much as the wall itself given how much water a single east coast low can put through a sloping block. Salt exposure is the other constant. Properties this close to the water need proper reinforcement cover, an appropriate mix and a sealer chosen for coastal conditions, and spalling on older balconies, steps and driveways is common enough here that it is often what brings people to us. Housing runs from original cottages and walk-up units through to substantial contemporary rebuilds, and access is frequently too tight for a truck, so pumped and staged pours are routine.

Bar Beach blocks leave very little margin for error, so we set out levels and gradients carefully, protect gardens, gates and existing paving while we work, and build drainage into retaining structures rather than adding it afterwards. Reinforcement cover and sealer selection are specified for salt exposure rather than copied from an inland job.
