Small or awkward areas also cost more per square metre than open floors, simply because setup and edge work take proportionally longer.

Almost any slab in the house can be polished, but each room asks something slightly different of the finish. A kitchen has different priorities to a garage, and a poolside area different again. Here are the spaces we are asked to polish most, and what we would generally recommend for each.
The most popular starting point and often the easiest win. A ground-and-sealed garage floor stops the dusting you get from bare concrete, resists oil and tyre marks, and sweeps out in minutes. Add a non-slip sealer if the car comes in wet from the coast.
No grout lines to trap spills, and no join under the dishwasher waiting for the day it leaks. A honed or mid-gloss finish is usually the right call in a kitchen, since it hides everyday marks far better than high gloss and still wipes clean in seconds.
Polishing works beautifully across large open areas because the floor runs unbroken from one zone to the next. A lighter salt-and-pepper exposure keeps things calm under furniture and rugs, and the reflected light makes the whole space feel larger.
These take the most punishment and show it first. A polished entry handles sand, wet feet and constant traffic without wearing through, which counts for a lot in a beachside city. Higher gloss suits entries where you want the impact.
Covered alfresco floors want a honed, low-sheen finish with grip built into the sealer, because these areas stay wet through summer storms and pool season. You get the polished look flowing out from the living area without the slipperiness gloss brings once the surface is wet.
