Newcastle Earthworks

Earthworks is the job of getting a block into the right shape and to the right height before anything gets built on it. That means bulk cut and fill on sloping sites, levelling and pad preparation for houses, sheds and slabs, benching and batter formation, driveway and access track formation, spreading and compacting imported base, forming drainage falls and swales, and stripping and respreading topsoil.

The two things that matter throughout are levels and compaction. Levels because everything downstream — slab heights, how water leaves the property, whether the driveway grade works — is set by them, so we work to the survey or the engineering drawings and check as we go rather than at the end. Compaction because poorly moisture-conditioned fill will settle under load, and a slab sitting on it will move with it. Fill goes down in layers and gets compacted in layers, not dumped and rolled once on top.

Drainage gets designed in rather than dealt with afterwards. On Newcastle blocks it is the intense summer storms and east coast lows that find every flaw in a site shape, and 100mm of rain in a few hours will show you exactly where the falls are wrong. We make sure water has somewhere to go before we walk away, whether that is a graded fall away from the pad, a swale or a connection into the stormwater system.

The right machine for a Newcastle earthworks job is usually decided by access rather than by the size of the work, and access is the binding constraint on most established suburban blocks. Tight residential sites call for a compact excavator in the 1.7 to 3 tonne range, small enough to fit through a standard gateway and work beside a fence without damaging it. Mid-size excavators around 5 to 8 tonne handle most site cuts, pad preparation and bulk work on a typical suburban block, and larger machines come in where volumes justify them.

Alongside the excavator, skid steers and tracked loaders handle spreading, trimming and material movement, with tracked machines earning their place on soft or freshly filled ground where wheels would rut it up. Tipper trucks move spoil out and base material in, plate compactors and vibrating rollers handle compaction at the required scale, and laser levels and grade control keep finished surfaces honest rather than approximate. Augers, rock breakers and rippers get added where the sandstone ridges through the eastern and southern suburbs demand them.

On materials, we work with recycled and quarried road base for driveways and slab bases, crusher dust for bedding and trimming to level, drainage aggregate behind walls and in trenches, clean fill for building up low areas, and topsoil for finishing. Where we can, we prefer recycled crushed concrete for base and fill, because it performs well for the purpose and keeps material out of landfill.
