A stormwater or sewer line that does not hold a consistent fall will pond, silt up and eventually block, so we set out and check grade along the run rather than digging a trench that is merely deep enough. Trench width is matched to what is going in it, because an over-wide trench costs more to dig, more to backfill and compacts worse.
How it goes back is just as important as how it comes out. Pipes get proper bedding rather than being laid on rubble, backfill goes in and gets compacted in layers instead of being pushed in loose, and surfaces are reinstated so you are not left with a settled trench line across the lawn or driveway.
