The build-up underneath separates paving that stays flat from paving that ripples and sinks. We excavate to a depth that suits the traffic, lay and compact road base, screed a consistent bedding layer, then lay, cut and compact the pavers before jointing sand goes in. Edge restraints are not optional: without them the outer courses creep outwards and the whole field loosens off. Driveways get thicker pavers and a deeper base than a garden path, because a car does not care how good the pattern looks.
Repairing and relaying existing paving is a large part of what we do. Sunken panels, wheel ruts where the base was never deep enough, weeds and ants finding their way up through failed joints, and edges that have crept outwards are all recoverable, usually by lifting the affected area, rebuilding the base and relaying the same pavers. Re-sanding and sealing afterwards holds the joints and makes the surface far easier to keep clean.

Almost every paving problem we are asked to fix traces back to the base. It is the part nobody sees, it is the easiest place to save a few hours, and it is the reason a driveway laid three summers ago now has wheel ruts through it. We dig to proper depth, compact in layers and check levels as we go, because no amount of care in the laying pattern compensates for a base that was rushed.
Drainage is the other thing we plan rather than hope about. A Newcastle storm can put 50mm of rain down in an hour, so paving that sits flat or falls the wrong way will pond, wash jointing sand out and undermine the bedding layer. We set falls deliberately and make sure water has a defined exit before we start laying.
