Hamilton South is noticeably more open than the suburbs immediately around it, built largely from post-war brick housing on wide streets with generous verges and blocks that leave room to work. That changes what is practical: double driveways, a second parking bay, a trailer or caravan space and a decent shed slab are all realistic here in a way they simply are not in Cooks Hill or The Junction. A great many of the original driveways from that era were poured thin, unreinforced or as strip driveways, so replacement rather than repair is a common starting point once the cracking and settlement reach a certain point. The land falls gently across much of the suburb, which is enough to work with for drainage but not enough to do the job on its own, so falls need to be set deliberately. Renovation and rebuild activity has picked up considerably, which frequently means integrating new concrete with existing surfaces at slightly different levels or coordinating the pour around a builder’s programme. Empire Park and the surrounding mature street planting add root pressure on the older frontages.
