A block wall starts underground, and that is where its strength comes from. We excavate and pour a reinforced footing sized for the wall it has to carry, with starter bars set into it at the correct spacing. Blocks are then laid over those bars, vertical reinforcement is tied in as the courses rise, and the cores are filled solid with concrete so the finished wall behaves as one reinforced structure rather than a stack of separate units.
Behind the wall the drainage layer gets built properly: aggregate wrapped in geofabric, an agricultural line at the base running to a sensible outlet, and weep holes through the wall where they belong. Across the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie hillsides this matters more than most homeowners expect, because a heavy storm can put an enormous volume of water into the ground behind a wall in a very short time.

Drainage aggregate and an ag line go in behind the sleepers before any backfill, and the backfill itself is compacted in layers instead of tipped in and levelled. Why Concrete Sleepers Suit This Climate
Concrete sleepers suit Newcastle for a simple reason: nothing in the system is edible or rottable. Timber sleepers here are living on borrowed time between ground moisture, humidity, termite pressure and months of damp through a wet autumn, and a treated timber wall that looked solid at handover can be soft at the base within a decade. They also handle the weather. You get concrete durability at a mid-range price, the install is faster than block because there is no footing to cure and no rendering, and if you later want fencing along the top, the steel posts can often be extended to carry it.

Concrete fencing solves problems a timber fence cannot. The most obvious is sound: a solid precast panel has real mass, so it cuts traffic and neighbour noise in a way palings never will. On busy roads, corner blocks and properties backing onto arterials or the rail line, that is usually why people look at it in the first place.
Maintenance is the other draw. There is nothing to rot, nothing for termites to eat, no palings working loose and no repainting every few years — a genuine consideration in a humid coastal climate that is hard on timber. Panels stand up to storm winds far better than a paling fence, they do not blow over in a southerly buster, and they hold their line rather than sagging along the run. Colours and textures are moulded through the panel, so what you see is the material itself.
Because concrete fencing sits on posts and footings, it pairs naturally with retaining. On a sloped boundary we can build the retaining portion and the fence as one continuous structure, which is tidier and usually cheaper than building a wall and then fencing above it separately. It adds privacy, security and a boundary line that reads as part of the house rather than an afterthought.
