Commercial excavation is usually about volume, programme and coordination. There are bulk quantities to move, a schedule other trades depend on, and often traffic management, dust control and site documentation to deal with. Cut and fill balance matters more at that scale, because moving material once on site is far cheaper than carting it off and buying replacement fill back in.
